We have 2 threatening bills filed and moving has through the House. We have formed a legislative team of members to make decisions and work hard to control these bills. The bills are influenced by the Chair of the Economic Development and Tourism Committee who is very aligned with the hotel industry. I have known him for years and we have always an amicable relationship but he is not currently working to help us. This bill is a revenue bill that requires that the platforms remit, directly, the hotel/motel tax. STROAGA is not opposed to this per se but would like a provision against local bans on STRs added. We attempted to do this last year-but the session ended abruptly and we were unable to attach our amendment. This year, we must educate both chambers about the bans and this will be an arduous and sustained effort for at least a month. I am organizing a call bank and I need members to commit to making one or two calls a day to a legislator and to doing whatever is necessary to prevent a harmful amendment on  this bill.

    • Atlanta : the issue is driver’s licenses
The Atlanta Chapter is lead by a group of seasoned members who meet on Tuesday evenings at 5pm. If you are a new member and wish to learn about the industry (we never call it that publically) this is a good meeting to attend. Our central area of advocacy involves pushing back on Airbnb's refusal to let owners/managers ask guests for thier  driver's licenses. We assert that a driver's license is necessary to screen people but also to thwart criminal efforts such as forgery or the use of someone else's credit card. Airbnb has been a partner in achieving much of our legislative agenda but we part ways on this issue. Yet, if the city of Atlanta requires it, they must allow us to to do it. It is, after all, a safety issue.

    • Atlanta City Council March 15th Vote
To all Members: Here is the letter I sent the leadership team today regarding the very disappointing events of yesterday:
We are going to schedule a leadership team meeting (hopefully) by next Tuesday. Kathie has graciously agreed to do some indepth research on exactly what was passed and how. The amendments, which have substantially changed the 'paper' are considerable and still being developed. Hence, it is fruitless and counter productive for all of us to rush to figure it out.  After she gets preliminary information, she will meet with me and the 2 of us will meet with Airbnb to see what we have and decide on a plan going forward. We will present that to you with full information at our legislative meeting.  Meanwhile, I believe we have all learned a great deal about this city council. I am going to ask all of you to listen to the meeting. If you do not, you cannot make decisions going forward. It is necessary to understand the interworkings and sentiments of these people.  We are going to have to re-group- both in terms of the effort here- but also in how STROAGA acquires the necessary strength to fight this and other ordinances.  This is not the last stand. We can mobilize and beat much of what has/will happen.  But, as you have all learned, government affairs is not successful if it lacks the necessary resources.  Please reach out to the broader membership and all stakeholders involved and encourage them to take part. STROAGA is only as powerful as its people.  Pam Pam O Dell Executive Director, Short Term Rental Association of Georgia (STROAGA) CELL 850-570-3529

    • STROAGA ATLANTA
City of Atlanta Progress- Do not forward or discuss with non-members The regularly scheduled Atlanta leadership committee will not meet tomorrow Tuesday November 3rd. I want to be respectful of everyone's need to get out there and vote and of their time and there is in essence nothing to report at this moment. All is good at this point in time. Westmoreland Draft Ordinance- This ordinance will be heard on November 10th at 1:30 at the community development meeting. The present count is that we have 8 members favorable votes.  You are asked to make a call (using desirable demographics -as before) on the previous Monday between 4-7pm. Myself and Chloe (Airbnb) and others continue to address objections and game support. Shook Draft Ordinance- The original ordinance calling for a ban on short term rentals continues to make its way through the NPU process. Remember that NPUs  remain important and it is crucial that members of the leadership team continue to attend an advocate on our issues relentlessly at these NPU meetings! This is because, if push back from neighbors/NPUs is significant- some council persons may change their vote. I will supply leadership committee members with information going forward and will have a government affairs team meeting this Friday. Have a good week!

    • Update: Dec. 11, 2020 Cobb Ordinance
Cobb County Staff within the planning and zoning  department  within Cobb County have reached out to the short term rental Owners Association (in an ‘off the record’ fashion) in order to understand and work on an ordinance.   This is highly unusual and reflect our growing standing amidst local governments.  we have formed a small call leadership team and review the ordinance and determine priorities and actions. Myself , a seasoned board member, and the Cobb County chapter chair,  have a meeting on Thursday in order to hammer out revisions of the current ordinance.
